Supporting Focus and Attention: A Naturopathic Approach to ADHD

ADHD is the most researched psychiatric condition. Many people, including health care professionals, may have outdated concepts about the disorder. Our naturopathic doctors recognize this breadth of research and the significant role that genetics play in ADHD. Therefore, the goal of naturopathic treatment for ADHD is to identify modifiable factors that may improve nervous system functioning for people with ADHD.

Attention and focus challenges affect children and adults, though they often present differently across ages and genders. Children may struggle with impulsivity or restlessness, while adults often experience distractibility, mental fatigue, or difficulty following through on tasks. ADHD symptoms may not become apparent until mid-life for some or may get “missed” particularly in women due to gender bias in identifying the condition.

Patients may come into our practice already having the diagnosis of ADHD, or may be suspicious but not yet diagnosed, or have the diagnosis suggested by one of our doctors.

No matter where someone is in their ADHD journey, our goal is to take a comprehensive approach in assessing factors that influence attention, mood, and cognitive performance.

Key Areas of Assessment

1. Stress & Anxiety

  • Chronic and acute stress can overwhelm the body and mind, making focus and daily task management difficult.
  • Anxiety interferes with sustained attention and executive function.
  • Our doctors address the emotional landscape alongside cognitive symptoms, often recommending exercise, counseling, and targeted supplementation.
  • The relationship between ADHD and anxiety is bidirectional, so treating both is essential.

2. Nutrition & Diet

  • Nutrient deficiencies can impair brain energy metabolism and cognitive function. Common nutrients tested and supplemented include:
    • Iron
    • Zinc
    • Magnesium
    • Omega-3 fatty acids
    • B-vitamins
  • A diet low in processed foods, added sugars, and artificial substances is key, with a focus on blood sugar balance, which Dr. Runde emphasizes as crucial for ADHD.

3. Complementary Treatment with Medications

  • For patients already using ADHD medications, naturopathic treatments are designed to:
    • Enhance medication efficacy
    • Mitigate side effects
    • Target additional treatment areas
  • This integrative approach aims not just to manage symptoms, but to improve focus, balance, and overall quality of life.

An Integrative & Individualized Approach

Naturopathic care for ADHD is individualized, integrative, and focused on optimizing nervous system function. By addressing stress, nutrition, lifestyle, and medication complementarily, patients of all ages can achieve greater focus, balance, and quality of life.
