Starting Care With a Naturopathic Doctor

Starting care with a naturopathic doctor is different by design. Your first visit is longer and more in-depth so we can review your history, symptoms, and any past records to understand the full picture.

As licensed naturopathic doctors in Maryland, we can perform targeted physical exams, order and interpret labs and imaging, and prescribe natural therapies. Your care plan may include nutrition, supplements, herbal medicine, lifestyle support, or referrals when needed.

Our goal is to keep every step transparent, from visit costs to testing and follow-ups, so you always know what to expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Charm City Natural Health is open for patient visits from 8AM to 4PM on Monday through Friday. Appointments are required.

Initial naturopathic visits are 75-90 minutes, which permits your naturopathic doctor to conduct a complete intake, assess your health habits, make any recommendations and spend plenty of time explaining the course of treatment and answering any questions you have. Subsequent visits may last 45-60 minutes.

Initial and follow up integrative psychology visits are 45-60 minutes in length.

We’re in Suite 300 at The Quad at Cross Keys (2 Hamill Rd, Suite 300, Baltimore, MD 21210). If you put that into Google Maps, you will get good driving directions to the parking lot. The Quad is a large red brick office building and is the southernmost building at Cross Keys, adjacent to the Poly-Western football field. We recommend entering through the South Gate on Falls Road, not through the main Gate House. There are two parking lots with free parking. You can park in either lot. Make your way to the part of the building labeled “East” or “Center.” It is all one, large, H-shaped building. Take any elevator or stairs to the 3rd floor. Follow numbered suite signs until you find Suite 300. We are at the end of a very long hallway. Call 443-835-1268 if you get lost in the building.

Naturopathic Doctors are not licensed to be primary care providers by the state of Maryland.

Yes! Our naturopathic doctors work with children and often complement the care provided by a pediatrician. We take time to understand your child’s health history, nutrition, development, and unique needs and can provide natural strategies for issues such as digestion, allergies, immunity, and attention or behavioral concerns. Pediatric visit lengths and fees are slightly different from adult visits, so please refer to our visits and fees section above for more information. Drs. Paddock and Runde are not pediatricians and cannot take the place of your pediatrician.

Dr. Apel primarily sees adults, but may see teenagers on a case-by-case basis. Adult and teen integrative psychology visits are the same length.

No. In Maryland, naturopathic doctors are not licensed as pediatricians or primary care providers. We encourage all families to maintain a relationship with a pediatrician or PCP for routine medical care, vaccinations, and emergencies.

We are happy to accept payment from Flexible Spending Accounts or Healthcare Savings Accounts, which are features of some insurance plans. They can be used to pay for both visit fees and in-office supplements. FSAs and HSAs can also be used to purchase supplements on Fullscript. Any letters of medical necessity or supporting documentation you may need to use your FSA or HSA will be provided free of charge upon request. A credit card is required on file at the time of scheduling. If that credit card on file is an FSA or HSA card, a backup card is also required to be on file. Please call the clinic if you have further questions.

Visit fees do not include the costs for supplements recommended by our providers or specialty labs, if ordered. Specialty lab prices are discussed before they are ordered and are not needed for all patients. Supplements are available for purchase at the office, sometimes from retail stores, as well as through Fullscript, an online fulfillment service. All supplements available for sale at Charm City Natural Health or Fullscript are available for 25% off retail prices.

Drs. Paddock and Runde order a variety of tests, both conventional and functional. Some tests can be billed to insurance, while others cannot. Costs associated with testing will be discussed at your appointment.

The number of visits depends on each patient’s health and goals. Prospective patients should plan for at least 3-4 visits to work on their initial health goals. The first naturopathic visit (75-90 min) gathers information through history, physical exam, and review of past medical records. The doctor orders labs if needed. The second naturopathic visit (45-60min) typically happens 2-4 weeks later to discuss results and create an initial treatment plan. Subsequent follow-up visits are necessary and determined by individual need. They typically happen every 3-4 months to monitor treatment efficacy until health goals are met. Patients who are able to work with us over the long term reap the most benefits from a naturopathic approach throughout the phases of their lives.

The frequency of integrative psychology therapy visits is determined by the patient and Dr. Apel, and may occur weekly, once a month, or as needed. You will discuss this with Dr. Apel during your first visit.

Naturopathic doctors are trained to work within your existing healthcare team and do not replace any primary care provider or medical specialist. With your permission, they can communicate with your other healthcare providers if necessary.
